Would you guys mind taking a look at my itinerary? I am open to all suggestions! My boyfriend and I are coming next month. I really wanted to try to plan this vacation pretty well, since we have a tendency to not research anything before going and wander around aimlessly. This will be our first trip to Boston. We are both history and beer buffs (as you can probably tell as you read). We are staying in Woburn to save money (I got an amazing package deal - flight, hotel, car - on Priceline).
Wednesday morning - arrive 11:15, pick up rental car
Drive to waterfront, lunch (Barking Crab, Legal%26#39;s Test Kitchen?)
4:00 Tour/Taste at Harpoon
Drive to Woburn, check in
Eat dinner
Rest up for the big days ahead
Thursday - ride commuter train into town (I%26#39;ve read it%26#39;s better to take this during the week and the T on the weekends, true?). Arrive North Station, T to Boston Common
Boston Common, Public Gardens
Get Freedom Trail guidebook from visitor%26#39;s center
Freedom Trail all day (I know I will have to stop and look at absolutely everything, so I am allowing the whole day)
Lunch maybe Fanueil Hall area (not sure how fast the pace will be)
Tour USS Constitution
Drinks at Green Dragon in Charlestown (for the historic aspect)
Ferry back to Long Wharf (just cause I wanna take a ferry in the harbor and read about the inexpensive T ferry)
Dinner in North End (probably La Summa)
Friday - commuter train into town
Urban Adven Bike Tour at 10:00 (to see all the different neighborhoods, I%26#39;m choosing this over Duck Tour)
Maybe squeeze in Fenway Park tour if the bike tour doesn%26#39;t run too long
Tour Sam Adams
6:00 - American Craft Brew Festival! (mainly the entire reason for our trip)
Dinner wherever the buzz leads us (we won%26#39;t be getting out until 9:30 or so, do most dinner places stay open that late around that area?)
Saturday - drive to nearby T station, T into town
Cambridge, Harvard, Museum of Natural History (this is easily scrubbed if we are too hungover to get up early, won%26#39;t break my heart)
Lunch at Mr. Bartley%26#39;s
Head down to Fenway - Cask n Flagon, Baseball Tavern
Sox at 3:55! (yep, I%26#39;ve got tickets)
I%26#39;m thinking dinner somewhere in Back Bay and drinks at Top of the Hub?
Sunday - Lexington and Concord
Drive to airport, drop off car
Fly out 3:15
What do yall think?
Could you look at my itinerary please?
Sounds great, but a few suggestions:
1. on that first afternoon, I%26#39;d forgo the waterfront for Back Bay or Beacon Hill. The area where the LTK and Barking Crab is located is kind of off the beaten path. How about heading into Back Bay or Beacon Hill? During the day there%26#39;s a good chance you could grab a metered spot on Charles Street in Beacon Hill or Boylston Street in Back Bay. Both neighborhoods have an abundance of restaurants. I like The Sevens on Charles Street in BH, and The Parrish Cafe on Boylston St. in Back Bay (in between Berkeley and Arlington Sts.)
2. I think you%26#39;ve mistaken the Green Dragon for the Warren Tavern in Charlestown. The Green Dragon is actually located in Faneuil Hall. The Warren tavern is located on the corner of Main St and Pleasant St in Charlestown.
Everything sounds like fun.
Could you look at my itinerary please?
Haha..yeah I meant Warren Tavern. I have no idea what I was thinking. Original post edited.
The only reason I was thinking Waterfront for lunch on the first day is because Harpoon is right there too. Thanks for the suggestions!
Can I make one suggestion???
I would look at taking a taxi to Woburn after the 4:00 tour/tasting at Harpoon :)
Just kidding. My wife and I will be there (first time as well) that same weekend. We are flying out on Saturday instead. I didn%26#39;t know the Beer Fest was going to be there, or we would have booked for Sunday as well.
Can%26#39;t offer too many other suggestions other than enjoy the beer...
Kevin
haha..yeah Kevin I have heard about the ';tours'; at Harpoon. We are pretty excited. We are actually thinking about taking a taxi on the day of the Beer Fest to the T station and back so we don%26#39;t have to drive that day.
We are also planning to check out Sunset Grill %26amp; Tap - something like 110 beers on tap!
Hope you and your wife enjoy Boston!
It looks like a great plan, enjoy our city!
You should be able to find a meter near the waterfront, if not, then there are plenty of parking lots in that area. It should be a pretty easy drive from the airport to the waterfront/ seaport area. Head right for the Ted Williams tunnel and then take the first exit.
Where in woburn will you be staying?
Rockytop...guess I shoulda looked at the moniker before hand...
I am a Mississippi State Fan, and I think I am banned from talking to a volunteer...
We looked at the sunset bar and grill as well. Since I am from MS, we are still one of only three states left that are bound by the 6% ABV law, so going to a new state with great selection is really a fun time for me...
either way, enjoy your trip
Kevin
Can I make a couple of suggestions? OK, thanks.
First suggestion is the day you arrive, Wednesday.
My suggestion is to skip the Seaport area and instead drive to Jamaica Plain. Visit Doyle%26#39;s Cafe, a legendary irish pub in Boston. You can eat lunch there. From there, your right down the street from Sam Adams where you can do the brewery tour. Then head back to Woburn after that. I suggest this for a couple reasons. The first is that Sam Adams is the toughest place to get to, so use your car to do it. To do both Doyle%26#39;s and Sam Adams would be great. The second reason is the fact that you will be down in the Seaport area for the Beer Festival and it%26#39;s not an area most tourists spend much time in. You can do the 4pm Harpoon tasting on Friday before heading to the Festival nearby. Just a suggestion.
Sorry, my second suggestion is to check out Sunset Grill %26amp; Tap after your AdvenTour bike tour which will replace the Sam Adams tour. Take the green line outbound ';B'; to Packards Corner stop and walk a block or so up Brighton Ave to the Sunset.
I personally wouldn%26#39;t change your itinerary. Sounds fine to me. You%26#39;ll be able to park in the Waterfront Area in the large open lots near the restaurants for $12. By the way, just so you know, you%26#39;re only about a 10 mimnute walk from there to the Downtown Waterfront, which is a very beautiful area.
Street parking won%26#39;t work for you, especially in Back Bay. First, you highly unlikely you%26#39;ll find a space and secondly, the meters are for a max of 1 or 2 hours.
The only thing I would question is checking in at your hotel the first night and having dinner in Woburn. I would make sure you have a reasonable place you can go to there. Sorry I don%26#39;t know enough to suggestion one. Folks?? Otherwise, I would be tempted to eat in Boston first.
FYI, the T is all you%26#39;ve noted, including the train, so I%26#39;m not quite sure what you meant about weekdays versus weekends. The only way in from Woburn is the commuter trail, unless you drive in.

Much of your Thursday (Freedom Trail) is outdoor walking. If it%26#39;s a rainy day, consider switching Thursday and Friday itineraries. Don%26#39;t bother with the guides in costumes. Make sure you go inside the old North Church. The USS Constitution is often packed with kids, and they limit the number of visitors at a time, so you may want to save time and skip going on board. Be sure to continue up the last part of the the Freedom Trail and climb to the top of the Bunker Hill Monument- it%26#39;s a great workout (293 steps) and view from the top is fantastic.
