What to see / do around Boston ?

Hi,

I%26#39;m off to Boston for work this Saturday (17th) and found that it%26#39;s college graduation week end so all the hotels in downtown Boston are either full or well overpriced.

So I was contemplating staying outside Boston for the week end and having a rental car to discover the area.

Are there any places well worth visiting within 1 hour driving distance from North Boston?

Also, if you can recommend a town or area to stay in North of Boston, it would be very helpful.

Any advice is appreciated!

Cheers,

Phil

I dunno, is there anything worth visiting within 1 hour driving distance of London? :-)

I can%26#39;t resist recommending that you visit Stonehenge:

I%26#39;ve never really been there, so I%26#39;m not really suggesting you visit this. There is however a Bath in Maine, famous for it Iron Works.

I can certainly recommend you stay in Newburyport or any number of other towns outside of Boston.

Hi,

It%26#39;s very difficult to give an answer to a vague question like ';Any place worth visiting?';.

Many people find the Mall of America worth visiting, but you%26#39;d have to drug me and throw me in the trunk of a car as the only way to get me there.

So...what are your interests? Museums? History? Seashore? Mountains? Shopping? peaceful countryside? Exciting city life?

Be more specific and we can make some suggestions.

Also, if you do a search on the forum for ';Day trips from Boston';, there%26#39;s been a lot of discussion on this and you might get some ideas too.

Yes, sorry for posting a vague question. I%26#39;m not really a Museum guy, unless the weather is dreadful...

I guess, I%26#39;d like to drive through scenic places and see some nice towns. I really don%26#39;t know the area so I don%26#39;t know if I should head for the seafront or go more inland.

Thanks,

Phil

Remay%26#39;s list is great. Certainly plenty to see and do in her one hour list. As an alternative to renting a car you could take the train or ferry out of the city for the weekend up to Salem and poke around the town on foot. You could take the train back in when finished.

Good luck!

If your looking for a hotel for the night - to the north of Boston on the coast makes sense. Search in Newburyport, Gloucester, or even (shudder) Salisbury.

There%26#39;s a Marriot Fairfield in Amesbury that might suit you. You don%26#39;t indicate your budget.

The Garrison Inn in Newburyport is nice, but probably more than you want to spend, maybe, but you could spend the weekend just walking around Newburyport.

Plenty of good tips. Thanks a lot.

My budget is below $200 a night, preferrably below $180.

Cheers,

Phil

Just thought, I forgot to mention I enjoy photography if there%26#39;s anywhere that lends itself to that hobby in the area.

For picture taking or to visit a museum?

Cape Ann is beautiful to take pictures especially Rockport.

For a museum that specializes in photography try the Griffin Museum in Winchester, MA
