Where else to stay for Tangelwood -besides Lenox?

My wife and I have tickets for Sat and Sun 8/2 and 8/3. We hoped to stay in Lenox for a week if we could find a simple affordable in-town studio or apartment. They are all gone! Well the ones that we could afford are long gone.

We are asking for help with finding a PLAN B:

Can anyone recommend another town that might be both affordable and within easy driving range of Lenox? A nice hotel or an Inn would be fine - even for 3-4 nights.

We%26#39;d also like to spend a day on Mon or Tues in the Williamstown area. So, a place within 1/2 hour of Lenox/Williamstown would be ideal.

We might wish to hike the Appalachian trail for a day if it runs thru our intended target area.

Thank you

Pittsfield has come a long way in the last 10 years. Check out the White horse or Thaddeus Clapp B%26amp;B%26#39;s there. Its location boarders Lenox on the north and would be a step closer up to Williamstown.

Hotels during the summer in the Berkshires can be expensive. I agreed with BCC about checking out Pittsfield, but there are a limited number of hotels there. Aside from the B and B%26#39;s mentioned, check out the Comfort Inn on rotue 7 and 20.(South Street). This is on the Lenox town line. Lee also has a couple of hotels right on route 20 (Super 8 and Rodeway Inn) are two that come to mind. There are a couple of timeshare places in Hancock near Jiminy Peak which might have rentals available.

There is a brand new Hampton Inn in Lenox. It just opened. It is owned by the same owners are the Yankee Home Comfort. I don%26#39;t know what the pricing is there though.

I stayed at the Comfort Inn for 2 nights about 5 years ago. It was in a great location, clean and the people were nice. But it was a motel without that country charm you might want to get in the Berkshires. If you end up there, skip the free out of a box breakfast and head to Lenox. We found a great greasy spoon family diner. There are only a few streets down there where the shops are. It was someplace in the middle of them.

Have you checked out www.vrbo.com for vacation rentals in the Berkshires? You might look at Becket or Otis for more affordable rentals close to Lenox. The Appalacian trail runs through Becket and there are a lot of rentals on lakes there.

Pittsfield is a pretty good location. Williamstown if further north, so Pittsfield would be in the middle of the Lenox/Williamstown areas.

When we go to Tanglewood, we usually camp at October Mountain State Forest in Lee. You can%26#39;t beat the price.

And if you%26#39;re up for a good hike, hike Mt. Greylock. It%26#39;s the highest point in Massachusetts, and part of the Appalachian Trail. We were there in the fall, and just a warning, I believe the lodge at the top is still closed for renovations.

We love the Berkshires and have been to many of the towns. Our Mass351 blog has a lot of info on things to do in a lot of the Berkshire County towns, especially some of the smaller ones you might skip over.

Boston Computer Chic, Carol%26#39;s Restaurant (the greasy spoon family diner you referred to, I%26#39;m pretty sure) has been sold and will become some kind of cafe. In Lenox, there are nice French breakfast crepes and omelets at Barood%26#39;s (but pricey) and good breakfasts at Dish (but ditto).

Needarest, Pittsfield is movin%26#39; and groovin%26#39;, and if you find something in that central area, On a Roll and Cafe Reva are both great places for a really fine breakfast that%26#39;ll carry you to tea time.
