My hubby and I will be in Boston in 2 weeks. We will spend that day either driving south to the Cape and the National Seashore. Just a lazy day drive, walking on the beach, eating some good food, and enoying the scenery OR going north through Cape Ann, New Hampshire, southern Maine to Orgunquit and the marginal way. I have never been to New England, but I am a beach/ocean girl at heart. Mid may which would be prettier? Less crowded? Not freezing? (I am a Texas girl). Scenery, nice drive, some walking near the water, AND some good seafood are important. Which would you reccomend? Of course, if one direction is rainy and the other isn%26#39;t my decision will be made. Thanks!
1 day trip???
Neither. Go to Newport, Rhode Island and spend the day there. Excellent seafood restaurants, Cliff Walk, Mansions, beaches, shops, a drive along Ocean Drive. Downside is getting there. Not much in the way of scenery, but that can be said of Boston to Cape Cod and Boston to Cape Ann or Maine. It won%26#39;t surprise me to see a split crowd. Regardless of where you end up, be prepared for it to be chilly at the water. More so north than south. Hopefully it will be a nice, warm sunny day and you%26#39;ll be fine. By the way, didn%26#39;t we already have this conversation with you?
1 day trip???
Yes, Will, we did! My hubby says I am psycho about trips. Just thought there was a change in the ';weather'; or something. I am getting excited. Freedom Trail, USS Constitution, Prudential Center, Isabella Gardner Museum, Boston Gardens, Duck Tour, Whale watching, Faneiul Hall, and seafood. Have I forgotten anything important??
Also, what makes Rhode Island a better draw than Cape Cod or Southern ME? Just wondering?? Thanks so much for all of your help and I WILL post a trip review when I get home!
By the way, are you a parrothead? I%26#39;m wondering if your name suggests that. Maybe not, but I know a Jimmy Buffett song with ';back to the islands'; in it. You probably think I%26#39;m crazy now, lol.
Oh yeah! I am most definitely a parrothead! Just went to see him last Saturday in Frisco and it was an awesome show, party! In fact I%26#39;m listening to him live right now on Radio Margaritaville doing his concert at Jazzfest in New Orleans! I%26#39;ve listened to him for way more years than I%26#39;ll admit to! You?
Oh yeah, huge fan myself. I have just about every album he%26#39;s put out. I%26#39;ve been to just about every Labor Day weekend show at Great Woods for the last 10-12 years. He did Gillette Stadium last year. What a party that was! I%26#39;m glad he%26#39;s going back to Great Woods though, since I love the amphitheatre shows. Much more fun. I%26#39;ve listened to Radio Margaritaville many times as well! Take care.
We were in Newport, Cape Cod, Cape Ann, New Hampshire, and Ogunquit last fall. We loved it all. The drive from Glouster to Rockport is great along the water - some very pretty beaches. We did it a couple of times in the few days we were there and loved it. We absolutely loved Ogunquit, Perkins Cove and the Marginal Way. Also Kennebunkport Maine. Also either way, Cape Cod or Cape Ann might not really be a ';lazy day drive'; but worth the trip anyways.
Hello Backtotheislands,
I drove to Ogunquit today. We had an unseasonable warm, sunny day. A perfect day to walk the marginal way. It is still damaged in parts but it is in the middle of the walk near residential homes, there is a detour that takes you by the homes instead of the coast. I had my children with me and the walk from Perkins Cove to the detour and back was enough for them. If you start your walk at Perkins Cove, you will still enjoy the scenic walk. If you do chose the northern route, make sure, if nothing else, you go to Ogunquit and walk the marginal way. Spring has arrived here in New England, the grass is green, the trees are pollinating and the flowers are blooming. Let us know where you took your one day excursion. Enjoy New England!
Two weeks from now, things will be busier as the summer season is about to start. I think the traffic will be equally bad going either north, or south to the Cape.
My vote is for Cape Cod. A LOT more beach there. While Ogunquit has a huge, flat beach, and the town is charming, that%26#39;s almost all the beach there is, really. Maine really is a rocky coast. Cape Cod has it all. There are beaches everywhere, also pretty coves and bays, towns, seafood shacks, antique stores. If you can, pick a weekday (not a Friday) to do your day trip, to avoid the bad weekend traffic. Then I%26#39;d recommend going to the Cape, and some things worth visiting include: Route 6A (the Old Kings Highway, very scenic), Chatham, then north of Chatham the National Seashore begins and covers nearly the entire east and north coast of the rest of the Cape. There is a beautiful entrance to it, at Eastham. Provincetown is a bit of a drive, but really charming and surrounded on 3 sides by water. The National Seashore extends up to Provincetown. You can get to P%26#39;town (as we call it) by ferry from Boston. While in P%26#39;town you can explore the town, then get to the big beach by local bus or rent a bike. Don%26#39;t miss the National Seashore. Chatham also has a spectacular beach (Lighthouse Beach) and is very pretty. If you go there, go to the ';town landing'; and go up on the observation platform over the harbor. Seals hang around there, since it%26#39;s a fishing dock.
