I%26#39;m visiting Boston for a week in mid-August travelling alone from England. I%26#39;m stayting at the Charlesmark hotel and looking forward to walking round the city exploring its history, sites, museums and places of interest. I was thinking of making a couple of day trips to other places of interest, using public transport. I was thinking of day trips to Provincetown and Salem but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions which would be easy to do using public transport. Many thanks.

Both Salem and Provincetown are accessible by public transpo; the former by commuter rail train, the latter by high speed catamaran. Rockport is another suggestion. It%26#39;s at the tip of Cape Ann and is a snug town right on the water. There lots of shops and galleries. Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower II might be of interest. The inner harbor islands would be lovely in mid-august. You can take a water taxi from Rowes Wharf. George%26#39;s Island has an extensive fort, but the others would be great if you want to do some hiking/exploring.

Salem can also be visited by ferry from Boston. It%26#39;s actually a nice cruise along the rocky coastline providing some great views. It%26#39;s about a 40-50 minute ride.
