Transportation in Plimoth

I will be traveling with a group of 17 people at the end of June. We are planning on visiting Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower, coming down from South Boston. I understand the plantation and ship are about 3 miles apart and it is not recommended to walk from one to the other. Has anyone been there and can tell me what to expect? It seems a little odd to me that there is not a shuttle from one place to the other. We are hoping to do all of this with public transportation. Any advice?

Has anyone ever taken a group there before? How did you get around? How far is the plantation from the North Plymouth Station? Is a taxi the best answer for a group this large?

Transportation in Plimoth

You could call Plimouth Plantation but my understanding is that you really need a car... you could use a cab, I suppose. You might consider renting a car b/c there%26#39;s more to see on the South Shore and you might enjoy driving around a bit.

Hi Heidi,

Basically the MayflowerII is a tour of the ship, very beautful replica by the way, where you get to see just how cramped it was for the folks coming to America. They are dressed in period clothing and you can interact with them and ask questions.

The Plantation is a little different. The tour starts with a video presentation. Then it%26#39;s off to see the Plantation. There are two camps there. The English settlers camp with actors dressed in period clothing and the Native Americans camp with real native americans. It shows you how life was like back then, and once again you are encouraged to ask questions. The native americans are very candid about how the white man invaded their lands. Overall, it is a very neat learning experience about early american life. You end your journey by visiting the gift shops and you can also eat there. Not recommended as it%26#39;s a bit expensive and there%26#39;s better choices back in Plymouth along the harbor area.

There%26#39;s also a Pilgrims Museum nearby the MayflowerII as well which can be explored. The Plymouth Rock is also along the waterfront, but it tends to be a disappointment. Just a small rock but it%26#39;s there to say you%26#39;ve seen it.

Onto public transportation. You say you will be in South Boston. Where do you plan to catch the commuter rail train? It would be best for all of you to catch it at South Station where they originate. You want to take the Old Colony-Kingston line and take it to Kingston Station, not North Plymouth Station. Bus service can be taken from Kingston Station into Plymouth Center for the Mayflower II, Plymouth Rock, Museum and the downtown/harbor area. You then take another bus from Downtown to Plimouth Plantation. Cost per trip is $1 for adult, .50 cents for kids. I%26#39;m not certain if the buses are full size or the smaller 25 person buses, and I%26#39;m also not sure how many people usually take the bus from the train station into Plymouth. I%26#39;ll give you the transit website which you can look over. You may want to call them ';GATRA'; and explain what your plan is to find out if they can accomodate all of you on the buses. Taking public transportation would save you alot of money over taking a private shuttle bus. I%26#39;ll also give you the website for the MBTA which you will take from Boston to Kingston. Look under commuter rail to find your info. Good luck and enjoy Plymouth if you make it.

Thank you! The gatra website looks like a good possibility. I will check it out a little more thoroughly. It would be wonderful if we did not have to rent cars. We will be staying at the Courtyard South Boston. I%26#39;m not sure which T stop is closest. I figured I would find out when we get there. I was told it was only a block or two from our hotel.

Heidi,

One thing to remember. The subway T and the commuter rail T are different. The subway takes you around Boston. The commuter rail takes you to towns outside of Boston. For your hotel, you would need to get on the subway at Andrews T stop and take that to South Station. From there you would take the commuter rail to Kingston.

Thank you so much for your help.

Can you tell me where I buy the passes(ticket) to either one of these? I read somewhere that you can%26#39;t buy a weekly pass at the airport. Is is possible to by a 2 week pass? Also do you need a separate pass for the commuter rail if you have one for the T, or does one serve for riding both?

Here are some links to the MBTA, I hope these links help to answer your quetion.

Please note: Plymouth and Kingston are in Zone 8 of the commuter rail..
