train to New York

Is there a train from Boston to New York? We would like to take our granddaughter to New York for a day and we will be staying in Boston.

train to New York

There is a train to NYC, but I doubt it%26#39;s worth going for a day trip. The ';regular'; train takes 4 to 4.5 hours each way and the Acela ';high speed'; train takes 3.5 hours each way. All the info is on the Amtrac.com website.

train to New York

I have taken the Acela train from Boston to New York for a day, and it really isn%26#39;t bad. You can have the whole afternoon to check out some of the sights. Of course, staying over night would be even better.

Peter Pan / Grehound Bus runs buses pretty much on the half hour back and forth all day... they%26#39;re an alternative. I%26#39;ve never done a day trip but have done an overnight...very reasonable..

Thank you so much. We will rethink our time in Boston based on your info.

Just a quick clarification to AlanM%26#39;s comment - it should be amtrak.com - and you should be able to get acela information there as well.

FYI you can take the Fung Wah or Lucky star buses to NY and back. $15 each way if cost is a factor.

We now periodically warn folks NOT to take the Fung Wah buses because of their terrible accident record. You can take Greyhound for the same money by buying your tickets on-line. That is the cheapest way from NYC - even cheaper than driving.

Grandpa, I%26#39;m going to go by the belief that you are over 50 as am I, take the train , stay overnight, then return. As said earlier, 3.5 hours each way, not counting those incidental stops due to work or right of way issues that only train people know. Bottom line, unless you take a shuttle flight down, which would be faster, stay the night in NYC if you do it. Enjoy!!

The cleanest, safest, most reliable bus, with a bathroom on board, is the Bolt Bus (BoltBus.com). It%26#39;s $15 ($17 during rush times) and drops you off at 34th St and 8th Ave, in front of the New Yorker Hotel. Takes about 3.5 hours each way.

I agree with the previous person; it%26#39;s too exhausting to do a round-trip day trip from Boston to NYC, no matter how you travel. Consider staying overnight, especially if you%26#39;re over 50 (I%26#39;m 52) and traveling with a child. Most midtown Manhattan hotels will run you at least $250 for the night.

The Fung wah bus is terrible. Not only the accidents that have occured but the buses are not always in good repair and I have ehard of a number of times that they have broken down and left passengers waiting for another bus to come pick them up. As stated already, Greyhound has a much more reliable service and the cost is the same as Fung Wah and Lucky Star.

You can do a day trip by train or bus and have a good deal of time to spend in NYC if you leave early and come back as late as possible. The only issue is that you have to plan your time carefully while in NY to see just those sites that you really want to see. A day trip to NY won%26#39;t allow you to walk through Times Square, get to the Village, go see sites like the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty and walk through Central Park in the time you would have available. If you plan ahaead to stay within one area of te city where you can see some of things you would like to see, it%26#39;s doable.
