Has anyone been to see ';El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III'; at MFA? My husband and I came to Boston in 2006 for ';Americans in Paris'; and would like to see these two giants of Spanish painting also. Please offer your comments if you%26#39;ve seen the exhibition.
Two giants of Spanish painting at MFA
It%26#39;s definitely worth seeing. It%26#39;s a well put together exhibit that includes not a good representation of the works of Velazaquez and El Greco but also some beautiful work by other artists of the time. It%26#39;s a great example of the shift in artistic style and tastes that was taking place in Spain and across the rest of Europe at the time.
Here is a link to a review I found. It%26#39;s an a interesting read and gives a very accurate description of the exhibit:

Two giants of Spanish painting at MFA
It%26#39;s a very good exhibit if you like Spanish art of that period. There are works by both El Greco and Velazquez, but the exhibit really showcases other Spanish artists during the reign of Phillip III who have been overshadowed by those two but are quite talented and underappreciated. If you go, I would recommend the audio tour.
Quite an offer from MFA --
The Museum opens its doors to the community on Memorial Day with free admission to the collections and to the popular exhibition ';El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III'; (regularly $23; available on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 10:00 am).
A fun-filled day of activities focusing on Spain and Spanish culture. Hear stories, make art, and tour the collections!
Go to www.mfa.org/calendar/sub.asp… for details of the Memorial Day Open House -- Exploring Cultural Roots: Perspectives on the Spanish Legacy.
(Alas! I live more than 650 miles away...and actually already have plans for the weekend in Rochester where we%26#39;ll view ';American Impressionism: Paintings from The Phillips Collection'; at Memorial Art Gallery.)
Does anyone know if this exhibition might be extended? I just found out about it, and it ends the day we fly into Boston (arriving too late in the evening to make it to the MFA).
No, it will be packed up for the showing at The Nasher Museum at Duke University...on view there August 21 through November 9. Their site announces it as ';an old master exhibition that is perhaps the most important of its kind ever shown in the Southeast, if not the entire United States.';
Hey Pat, that ';Americans in Paris'; was the one with ';Whistler%26#39;s Mother';, right? That was a great exhibition.
I agree...it was extraordinary. Whistler%26#39;s ';White Girl'; too, and Sargent%26#39;s notorious ';Madame X';, the small pair of Charles Courtney Curran garden paintings, gorgeous Mary Cassatts, Alexander%26#39;s magnificent ';Repose';! So many memorable images.
Will you go to see ';El Greco to Velázquez';?
I agree with the above posts. We enjoyed the exhibit, including the lesser known artists.
