Whale Watching Early June

My family (2 adults 2 teens) will be in the area beginning of June. Is this a good time to see whales? Wondering about whale watching tours? Is there a good chance to really see whales on these tours? Do you have to travel far out to sea to see them? I heard sea sickness is a real problem for most people.

We will also be heading up the Maine coast. Is there a better place to go whale watching in Maine?

Please any advise would be appreciated. Thanks!

Whale Watching Early June

Gloucester is a great place to go on a whale watch because of the proximity to Stellwagen Bank and Jeffrey%26#39;s Ledge. It%26#39;s a little early in the season but you%26#39;ll probably see something. The whales are working their way back up the coast for the summer, so heading further North is probably not going to help.

The water can be rough during late Spring, so if you%26#39;re prone to seasickness you%26#39;ll want to take preventative meds. Ds and I don%26#39;t get seasick, but Dh can get a little queasy but the pressure bracelets work great for him.

They were seeing whales (not sure which kind) from Race Point beach in Provincetown last weekend and the whale watch boats from P-town were also reporting sitings ... I don%26#39;t think you%26#39;ll be too early ... they%26#39;re out there now and will be around for a while.

They%26#39;ve been seeing whales around Massachusetts since mid April. It was a big deal and made the newspapers and TV because the experts were saying it was rare to see so many so early in the season. I%26#39;m sure the whales will be waiting for you when you go. All the whale watches out of Massachusetts visit Stellwagen Bank. It%26#39;s about 5-25 miles out to sea depending on where you leave from. Gloucester or Provincetown are great ports to leave from, since they reach the bank quicker than other ports. If you haven%26#39;t been to sea before, it%26#39;s usually a good idea to take something to prevent seasickness. There%26#39;s a few different meds out there like Dramamine. Most whale watch companies will let you go out again for free if you don%26#39;t see whales. They are that confident that you%26#39;ll see whales. I can%26#39;t comment on the Maine whale watches since I%26#39;ve never taken one from there.

Thanks for all the information. I%26#39;m going to pick up the pressure bracelets hopefully they will do the trick. I hope the weather is nice when we are in town. I want to see the whales!!

Thanks!
