My wife and I will be flying into Boston for a few days before driving up to Quebec. After doing a lot of reading here I have determined I do not want a rental car in Boston (will take public trans). So my (probably stupid) question is, will it be a problem to take the T to the airport and find a shuttle to a car rental agency?
Rental car at Boston Logan (not arriving at the airport)
That%26#39;s not a problem at all.
Rental car at Boston Logan (not arriving at the airport)
Take the Silver Line from South Station. Get off at Terminal A, walk outside where it says ';Rental Car Shuttles'; and hop on the one for your rental agency. Piece of cake!
Hi,
You don%26#39;t have to take the T back to the airport to rent a car. You can rent them from in city locations. I know Enterprise has 3 or 4 places in Boston where you can rent. Hertz has a couple of locations in the city I am aware of too. There%26#39;s probably others too.
I think the only difference might be a rental car tax that the city imposes on agencies in town, whereas I don%26#39;t think it applies at Logan. Does anyone know whether this city tax is still in effect?
Will this be a one-way rental? If so, sometimes the agencies add restrictions that require you to go to the airport to pick up the car. (Don%26#39;t ask me why, I just know that%26#39;s been the case for me when handling travel arrangements as part of my job.)
Yes, Will is right that there are a number of locations around town - Hertz in the Park Square area near the Park Plaza Hotel, Avis at One Center Plaza in Scollay Square/Gov%26#39;t Center, and I think Dollar/Alamo at the Holiday Inn Beacon Hill.
We%26#39;ll be returning to Boston after our trip up north to fly home. I%26#39;ve read that better rates can be had by renting at the airport.
If you do need to head over to the airport, I would take Diva%26#39;s advice of taking the silver line bus from South Station. You%26#39;ll get dropped off right at the terminal instead of taking the subway over to the airport stop and waiting for the shuttle to bring you back to the terminal.
Logan Airport is in the City of Boston, and so the $10 convention center fee for rental cars is most certainly applied to cars there. So, if your rental agency has an office in town closer to your hotel, go for it.
Thanks, Rantipole. I just recall that there was talk at some point - way back when - that there was going to be some kind of a convenience tax or some such nonsense when doing the rental in Town rather than going out of the airport.
Rates at the airport may not be cheaper than the outlying locations. I know Hertz has a local rental place on the south shore that is reasonably priced. And, I don%26#39;t know how the tax works at Logan, but in some cities, that airport tax is not a flat rate, but a daily percentage that can really add up. I%26#39;d look on a site like travelocity for rental spots north of the city that are served by commuter rail. Hop on the train at North Station, get out of traffic, pick up car and go. Make certain that there are no restrictions on taking the car out of the US when you rent.
I%26#39;m in pretty much the same situation as you. I rented from Alamo through Costco and saved quite a bit of money. I also found it cheaper to rent from the Atlantic St. location than the airport. I am then returning the car to the airport before my flight.
