First trip without the kids - activities help

This will be my and my husband%26#39;s first trip without the babies (almost 2 and almost 1) and we%26#39;ve planned a weekend trip to Cape Cod next month. This will be the first time there for both of us. We%26#39;re very easy going and are just looking forward to a break from reality!

What sorts of things can we look to do? Daytime activities, romantic restaurants, day trips, etc? We are staying from a Thursday - Sunday and that Saturday is our anniversary.

Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oh yeah, we%26#39;re staying in Brewster. I understand that it is very family oriented, but we got such a GREAT deal that I won%26#39;t mind listening to OTHER people%26#39;s kids a bit... :-D

First trip without the kids - activities help

Hi,

Congrats on your first visit to the Cape. First of all, since you%26#39;ll be coming in May, your not going to have to deal with many kids running around. That doesn%26#39;t happen until June, July, August, so that will be nice. There is ALOT to do on the Cape. Since your staying in Brewster, a trip up the road to Provincetown would be nice. It won%26#39;t be in full bustle then, but enjoyable nonetheless. A drive along the National Seashore is always nice. There are many scenice drives around the Cape, route 6A being a good one. A visit to Chatham is always pretty as well. Consider taking the ferry over to Nantucket or Marthas Vineyard for a daytrip on your anniversary. Either place would blow you away with it%26#39;s charm and would certainly be a anniversary to remember forever. The Cape is teeming with great restaurants and I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll have some locals help you out with suggestions and must see%26#39;s in Brewster and vicinity. You could also rent bikes on either the Cape or Islands and ride the many wonderful bike paths. The Cape is a wonderful place and your visiting at a great time, before the summer rush. The only thing you won%26#39;t be able to do in May is swim in the ocean but I%26#39;m sure you already new that. You could but you would have to be half brave and half crazy. Enjoy your trip.

Congratulations!

You MUST eat at the Ocean House in Dennisport. There are many reviews here on Tripadvisor.

Depending on which side of May you%26#39;ll be there, you might want to see a show at Harwich Junior Theatre in West Harwich, which is very close to the Ocean House. They%26#39;re presenting a Neil Simon comedy during the second half of May.

I always recommend the herring ladders and mill in Brewster (such a beautiful and romantic setting!), and the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History as well. You could also pack a lunch and rent bikes to ride the Cape Cod Rail Trail.

Have fun!

Will has pointed out some great ideas. Also remember TripAdvisor %26#39;Things to Do%26#39; section for Brewster:

tripadvisor.com/Attractions-g41476-Activitie…

Nickerson State Park is highly rated (for trails and connects to the Cape Cod Rail Trail). Also Cape Cod Museum of History.

Give us a report if you visit any of these sites. I am unfamiliar with Brewster so would love to hear comments.

Also, if you do decide to go to the Ocean House, be sure to make reservations and ask in advance if you might have a table by the window, so you can watch the ocean. Lovely!

Thanks everyone for the great tips! Now, I%26#39;m really getting excited. Our anniversary is May 17, so we%26#39;ll be going mid-month. I don%26#39;t swim, soooo a cold ocean is no big deal to me. A scarcity of kids though, that sounds PERFECT! lol

This is year 5 for us, so I want it to be special.

I%26#39;ll be sure to post again after the trip with what we decided to do.

Has anyone taken the scenic train ride? Is it worth it?

To really experience Cape Cod you should get to the water...both ocean and bay. The best place to start exploring the ocean side is the Salt Pond Visitor%26#39;s Center in Eastham where you can get in touch with the history, both cultural and natural, of the area. There is a nice museum, theater with a short movies about the cape, small book store and rangers on hand to answer any questions you have. This is probably the best place to explore the National Seashore Ocean Beaches from Eastham to Provincetown. On your way back to Brewster stop in to Fort Hill and take a walk. The view is spectacular and the nature trails wind through field, forest and swamp with breathtaking views of Nauset Marsh and Coast Guard Beach.

Since you will be in Brewster, ask your innkeeper where the best beach is to experience both high and low tide in Cape Cod Bay. You will be amazed at the difference that 6 hours makes in the beach on the Bay side.

Have a great stay...Cape Cod is such a special place!!!

Hi, Brewster can be very romantic - there are great ';sunset beaches'; - Paine%26#39;s Creek is one that comes to mind, grab a bottle of wine and a couple of sand chairs, some warm jackets and enjoy the show! A really romantic place for dinner in Brewster is the Bramble Inn, right on Rt. 6A about 1/4 mile east of the Brewster Store and another is Circadia Bistro in Harwich (well-reviewed here) If you want to go all out - Chillingsworth is sublime! Also on Rt.6A (tho they might not be open for the season yet)

I haven%26#39;t taken the Scenic Train Ride but I did hear from more than one person that is was rather blah. Maybe someone else has better info.

I still think you should go to one of the islands for your 5 year anniversary but that%26#39;s your call.

Make sure to visit Chatham. Really charming Main St. with nice shops and many art galleries. Good casual lunch at The Squire or really nice dinner at Impudent Oyster. If the veranda is open at the Chatham Bars Inn, very romantic for drinks or afternoon tea. Check out the fish pier across from the Inn while the fishing boats are unloading (3pm-ish)....lots of seals in the water. Take a romantic walk along the beach across from the Chatham lighthouse....one of my favorite places in the whole world.

I always thought that the fishing fleet in Chatham had to work round the infamous ';bar'; that challenged boats coming and going from the Harbor. So doesn%26#39;t the time they off-load their catch depend on the tide of the day?
