We will be staying in Boston for 5 nights, Falmouth for 3 and then over to Martha%26#39;s vineyard for 4 nights. We will have 5 days left and would like to explore the mid to top of the cape. Can anyone suggest a base to stay that would have a nice beach and plenty of activities shops etc as we will have our 17 year old daughter with us. Will we really need to hire a car for this part of the trip? we were hoping to get the high speed ferry from Princestown back to Boston.

I%26#39;ll let other folks answer the location and activity questions, but I can tell you for sure that if you%26#39;re going to stay on the Cape for multiple days, you will really need a car. The Cape is very spread out and public transportation is pretty thin.
You will be best off returning the car from where you rented it, in order to avoid drop-off charges. You can ask about these. So if you rented in Boston, most likely your best bet is returning it there. If you got your car on the Cape, then maybe the ferry is more an option. Check it out before you rent the car.

Hi: Your schedule is confusing to me! Two quick notes:
1. How are you getting from Boston to Falmouth?
2. After your return to Falmouth from M.V.: You will def. need a car to explore the Cape.
The other posters are right about needing a car.
I might suggest that you consider Chatham or Orleans if you want a place for your daughter to shop, walk around, etc. Both have nice beaches. Orleans has the added benefit of being on the Cape Cod Rail Trail (bike trail) which is lots of fun. There is also mini-golf, bowling (great for rainy days) and a discount department store (although it%26#39;s still a lovely town). Chatham has more high end shops and a great walkable downtown.
Where you stay will depend on your budget. You might try looking at hotels suggested here on TA.
