A Scottish expression of surprise and disbelief.
Hotel prices in Boston are unbelievable.
Obviously the fact that we are planing on visiting in ';The Fall'; has a direct bearing but it seems we can%26#39;t find a hotel that will cost us less than $5-6 grand for the two weeks.
So it looks like the trip to Boston may not materialize.Which is a shame as we had been really looking forward to it.
Thanks to everyone who has posted on the various topics as your help has been much appreciated.
Awrrabest.
Gordy.
Jings, Crivvens Michty MeOh, come on now Gordy. There%26#39;s a hotel for every budget around Boston. Tell us your budget and I%26#39;ll bet we can recommend something for you. 5 or 6 grand for 2 weeks? You must be looking at the 4 Seasons or Ritz Carlton for those prices. I%26#39;m very surprised with that strong euro that your complaining about the cost of visiting Boston. Try living in the States and visiting Europe. That%26#39;s surprise and disbelief.
Jings, Crivvens Michty MeBoston hotel prices are very high throughout most of the year, with the exception of the dead of winter.
But I agree with Will, if you tell us what kind hotel requirements you have, we probably can find a hotel within your budget that will allow you to see the city properly. It might be on the outskirts of Boston, but the subway system is pretty good here.
Hi, Gordy - if I understand your post correctly, you were hoping to stay 2 weeks (14 nights) in one hotel while visting Boston? If that is the case, may I suggest another option? Contact the hotel directly and to see if you can negotiate a better rate than what is posted on the internet. Given that you are staying for an extended length of time, the rooms manager may be able to give you a better rate. Also, as the previous posters have mentioned, there are reasonable options on the outskirts of the city, many of which have transport to the ';T'; which will take you wherever you want to go. I did a quick search on sidestep, looking at suburban hotels that I know are close to the T, using the random days of Sept. 15- 29 and it looks like you could do it for about $2500.00 at a decent property.Cheers!
Gordy -- what about a self-catered apartment/condo? They%26#39;re usually a better deal than hotels -- and you have the added benefit of being able to cook your own meals. Try VRBO.com and homeaway.com. Google searchs for ';vacation rental'; will do better than ';self-catered'; which not a common US phrase.
Will007,
Actually, they use pounds in Scotland, not Euros.
But the pound is even stronger than the Euro these days, so your point is even more valid.
Thanks J-A-W-P, The UK pound is really kickin butt these days.
Priceline
Hi Gordy,
We%26#39;d love to have you come visit. If you can give us your desired nightly budget for a hotel room, I%26#39;m sure there%26#39;s something satisfactory we can find for you. Also, please give us the dates for your visit.
From what you said, you have only been able to find hotels in the $400/night price range? There%26#39;s plenty in that range here, for sure. However, that is the highest of the high end.
There are many decent places to stay for half that price or even less, if you are willing to be outside of downtown Boston a bit.
Thanks Guys,
Actually the Pound and the Euro are getting pretty close to parity. I work in a bank and we sell Euros at 1.2 to the Pound.
I agree the Pound/Dollar rate is great but when I go onto the various hotel websites which quote prices in dollars the Sterling equivalent comes out at almost parity.
The problem is that we do not know the area or the surroundings, Were is a good base, etc.
We are looking for somewhere that is convenient, a hotel that is reasonable, ie clean, pleasant staff and in a safe area.
I think part of the problem is that the UK people have only the US TV imports to judge America on.
Don%26#39;t get mad!
I%26#39;ve been to Florida, New York, San Francisco and Alaska and found them to be absolutely great but when you are thinking of visiting a town/city for the first time the fear of the unknown kicks in.
It%26#39;s a sad indictment of our times when a country is judged by the TV programmes it produces.
I%26#39;m quite sure not everybody in America runs about shooting everything that moves.LOL.
I%26#39;m also sure that a great number of Americans think we Scots run about in Kilts and chase haggis, drink whisky all day long and shout Hoots Mon every 5 minutes.
God bless stereotypes.
If we could get a decent(doesn%26#39;t need to be 4 star) hotel for say up to $200 per night in an ok location we would be quite happy.
I think that part of the problem is with the ';Expedias'; etc who when asked to quote for UK citizens switch from the US system of charging per room to the UK system of charging per person. Call me cynical.
Anyway, no offense meant to anyone, even gun running, drug dealing, bank robbing, prison breaking muggers of any race or creed or colour or TV stereotype.
Love and good wishes to our Colonial Cousins everywhere.
Just don%26#39;t mention the Tea Party.
Gordy.
If you really do want to come, I can try to help. What is your check in date and what is your check out date?
Also, are you planning on an entire two weeks in Boston ?
Or are there are other spots you fancy visiting (see I used a British-type word, fancy, to help bridge our language gap.)
Exact dates will get you some exact suggestions.
Jings and crivvens we want you here....
