I was told newport is an interesting city. can it be done in a one day trip? how long a drive is it from boston? we have 4 days in boston -should we spend a day on a day excursion? thanks
boston to newportYes, Newport can be done in a one-day trip, and it%26#39;s highly recommended.
If you don%26#39;t hit some sort of rush hour or vacation traffic snarl, you can be there in roughly two hours, maybe a little less.
boston to newportA day trip is highly recommended if it fits into your 4 day itinerary. Newport is great but there are definitely other options for day trips. I like Martha%26#39;s Vineyard. Do a search under ';day trips from Boston'; and you%26#39;ll get many options.
I love the idea of Newport and The Vineyard. Both are great ideas until all the suggestions of what to do in Boston, start being posted. I would plan out what you wish to first see in Boston.
I like the Newport idea myself. It%26#39;s an hour and a half to get there, but once your there, your there. Lots to do and see for a day trip like the Cliff Walk, the Mansion tours, the harbor area, Thames Street and it%26#39;s quaint shops and restaurants, the beaches if you want to relax, Brenton Point and Fort Adams state parks. Having a car also allows you to do the famous 10 mile Ocean Drive as well.
The Vineyard overall has more to offer a visitor, but not really a daytripper. The ride to Woods Hole for the ferry is the same as Newport. You have to park in a satellite lot and shuttle to the ferry. Then the ferry is another 45 minutes to reach the island. Then you would want to visit more than one town which requires more shuttling around and finally have to catch the ferry back at some point. It makes for a long day travel wise.
So, either one is do-able, but I would pick Newport for a day trip and the Vineyard for an overnight.
Don%26#39;t forget about the Cape Ann area north of Boston as well. There%26#39;s some really cute towns up there to explore, especially with a car.
I have just returned from spending five days in Boston and can highly recommend the Newport trip.We drove down via the Wrentham Mall but it should only take about 90 minutes or so to go straight there. We stayed overnight but if you go directly there you will have plenty of time to do all the things advised by the other TA members.
We had great clam chowder in the Black Pearl restaurant at the front on the water.
Will hopefully post a trip report soon.
The Black Pearl is a great place to grab chowder. Then you walk to the rear and sit on a bench and look at the magnificent boats.
Thank you everyone so much - I love the ppl here on tripadvisor. I am so excited about our trip - one month go before we leave for Boston. Barb
Getting to Martha%26#39;s Vineyard fast try taking Cape Air from Boston...(puddle jumper plane but I like those)..cost around $138 roundtrip
As someone who is eagerly counting down the days to her trip to Boston, I look forward to reading Anniefield%26#39;s trip report. :)
