Hi all you knowledgable Triparoonies
Arriving in Boston October 8 for 7 days. What do I do,Where do I go? C%26#39;mon, give this your best shot!Preferably my wife and I would like a combination of City/Leaf peeping (I almost sound like a local!)and and the fulfilment of an ambition to visit Nantucket Island.
Sooooooo, plan me a route to give me the best of all three. We are in our early Sixties now but not yet ready for the easy life. I know I can rely on you - so get thinking!

One question, hopefully you%26#39;ll be renting a car for some of the time? This will be necessary to do some of the outlying areas. For Boston you don%26#39;t want (or need) the car but probably will need to pick it up for the days to travel to Nantucket or to do the leaf peeping part of the trip. If you won%26#39;t have the car it is still possible to see some outlying suburbs such as Rockport, Salem, Newburyport, Concord, etc. (these are on the various commuter train lines) but people need to know that to make suggestions.
Boston %26amp; surroundings in 7days
Columbus Day Weekend falls smack in the middle of your trip - the height of foliage viewing takes place over this weekend. Keep in mind that the leaves begin to turn up north and trickle down towards Boston by the end of October. This means that getting to those locations for leaf peeping may need to include an overnight in either New Hampshire of Vermont. Decent places go fast, so you%26#39;ll need to factor that in. But, what a wealth of places, from the Mount Washington Valley in the White Mountains to Woodstock, Manchester and Mount Equinox in the Green Mountains, even the Stowe and Waitsfield areas, there%26#39;s lots to see.
Nantucket would be a perfect spot right around that time - the days are still relatively warm and it%26#39;s quiet. The island will be easing into the Fall and it will be just the locals for the most part.
Hi Brian,
I would love to help give you some ideas and suggestions for your trip, but the following will be required first.
Will you have a car or rely on public transportation?
Approximate lodging budget per night in Boston
Approximate budget for lodging in Nantucket
Give me that and I%26#39;ll gladly do up a suggested itinerary. :)
What a wonderful lot you are! Three replies within an hour - fantastic.
To expand a little, we will probably pick a car up at the airport - or would we be better ';doing'; Boston first and then renting? In any event we always intended to drive to various locations and sample areas away from the city. We have visited Vermont and New Hampshire on a couple of previous summer vacations (there%26#39;s another ';Americanism';!) and thought that this time we could look at the southern end of New England. So, any suggestions for a loop type itinery incorporating the trip to Nantucket.(nb we have also spent some time on Cape Cod so omit this as a stopover)
With regard to accomodation, the Pound is mightier than the Dollar at present so I would estimate up to $200 per night - but obviously if you can reccomend good quality hotels for less than this I would be grateful.
Once again, many thanks in advance for your interest.
Regards Brian
DO NOT GET CAR !!! Until you leave Boston. It is costly to park it.
A nice little area in Southern New England is the seaside village of Mystic, Connecticut. About an hour and a half from Boston on Rte 95.
To get to Nantucket you need to get to Hyannis, MA and hop on a ferry. Not sure how long it is from Mystic but I%26#39;d guess about an hour. There%26#39;s a regular ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket that is about two and half hours, and a high-speed ferry that%26#39;s a little over an hour(but much more money). For both ferry information go to www.steamshipauthority.com (regular speed) and www.hy-linecruises.com (fast ferry).
I live in southern Mass and it%26#39;s 1 1/2 hrs to Mystic from my house. It%26#39;s also 1 hr to Hyannis from here. So it%26#39;s about 2 1/2 hours from Mystic to Hyannis. Mystic is really nice. There is the seaport and aquarium. Also you could look into Newport R.I. They have a nice waterfront, cliffwalk and mansions. Around mid October the foliage is hit or miss but still nice. Not quite peak but really pretty to look at.
I went to Nantucket in April. The fast ferry is one hour and cost 71.00 round trip. The slow ferry is a little more than 2 hours. Not sure of the price. Nantucket is really beautiful. I%26#39;d definitely plan a day there.
Enjoy your stay in America!
If you are going to Nantucket, how many days are you planning to stay? Columbus Day is usually peak foliage in the mid to southern parts of New Hampshire and Vermont. It will most likely be past peak in the White Mts. The southwest corner of NH is about a 2 hour drive from Boston, about 3 from the Cape and would allow you plenty of time to explore the Berkshires, southern Vt and the Monadnock Region of NH. But, you must make reservations for the weekends as soon as possible. Lots of colleges schedule their parent%26#39;s weekends in Oct and with the regular amount of fall tourism, rooms go very quickly especially on the weekends.
OK, I put together a suggested Itinerary. I will state that I don%26#39;t know if your leaving on the 14th. or 15th. back to England. I assume your going home on the 15th.
Looking at the hotel prices for Boston in early to mid October, rates are through the roof! Something big must be going on for room rates to be that high.
So, on October 8th, arrive in Boston and check into The Harborside Inn for 2 nights. Rates are around $219 per night. The hotel is about a 3 star property with a great location near Fanueil Hall.
October 10th, grab the rental car and drive 2 hours west of Boston to the town of Conway, Mass. Check in to the Pumpkin Hollow House for 2 nights. It%26#39;s a nice B%26amp;B with gourmet breakfast in the morning. Rates are $150 per night. Conway is in the heart of the Pioneer Valley and will be a perfect location for exploring the great fall foliage in the area.
October 12th, leave Conway and drive 3 hours to Hyannis. Park the car at the ferry lot or make arrangements to take it over on the ferry. I would leave it since your stay will be so short.
Check in to the Veranda House for 2 nights. It%26#39;s in a great location for seeing the island and the rooms and property are so charming. Rates are $189 per night. Continental breakfast served in the morning. Explore the island and hop on the ferry back to the mainland on the 14th, pick up the car and head back to Boston.
October 14th. Drop car off at airport and check into the Embassy Suites-Logan Airport. Rate is $269. Embassy is a wonderful airport hotel with tons of amenities. Take the T over to Boston to spend your last day/night exploring more of the city.
Oct. 15th. Take hotel free shuttle to the terminal and return home.
So there you have it. My suggested itinerary. Feel free to blow it up, but you did want us to get our minds going! Here%26#39;s the links for my itinerary.
