Where would you advise to stay 4 days 15-19 October 2008

We are spending a month in your beautiful country first time and want to spend the last 4 days of our holiday in Cape Cod. My husband wants to stay somwhere that a little oldy worldy nothing new. A clean place perhaps with a kitchenette so we can cook a couple of things. He wants to be able to walk onto the beach and hear the sea and relax.

Where would you suggest we stay.

Where would you advise to stay 4 days 15-19 October 2008

Take a look at the Fort Hill Bed and Breakfast in the National Seashore, Eastham. www.forthillbedandbreakfast.com

Their cottage with ocean views would be a nice place to relax and listen to the ocean. The Fort Hill Area and the 3 acre property that the small inn is on, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and will give your husband the ';old world'; feeling, with all the modern comforts, like WiFi, central heat, gas fireplace and DVD. The surrounding trails and open field landscape, that provide sweeping views of Nauset Marsh and the Atlantic, are maintained by the Park Service in order to keep the area much as it was in the mid-1800%26#39;s. The Fort Hill B+B is run by friendly innkeepers who can give you a great full breakfast, a bit of pampering and plenty of suggestions for things to do. You might note that the time frame of your visit will coincide with a very big weekend in Wellfleet, the Oysterfest. Since Wellfleet is just 10 minutes from Eastham, you can expect the lodging to be reserved well in advance so it%26#39;s good that you are researching now! Eastham is only 30 minutes from Provincetown and 20 minute from Chatham.

Another choice that%26#39;s peaceful but not isolated, (as Eastham can feel off season):

The Tern Inn

www.theterninn.com in West Harwich (sweet, little Cape town). Lovely short term cottage rentals and close to all restaurants, beaches and shops. Quick ride to Chatham... (a destination in itself and one of the nicest, quintessential Cape Cod towns).

fishing1, Eastham is home to a sizable year-round population and its location, just minutes from Orleans where many Chatham residents travel to work, shop and dine year-round, is central to the outer Cape. I would not say that Eastham feels isolated in October....quiet, yes! Additionally, October is not considered the off-season since the fall weather is quite mild compared to inland locations and many towns have their festivals during Sept. and Oct.

Bare bones, no TV, no fancy furniture, very old-style, on the beach, fairly quiet in Octobor, near the National Seashore and slighlty more %26#39;bustling%26#39; Provincetown: www.dayscottages.com

You might check this out in S.Chatham:

http://www.pleasantforestshores.com/

The cottages are a short walk to the beach but not on the beach. Truly ';Old Cape Cod';. Off-season, October rates are very reasonable (I%26#39;m not sure how far into October these are available, but worth a call to find out). In fact: In season rates are incredibly reasonable too.. (Nothing above $800.00 per week!)

Because you%26#39;re planning a trip in October, you might be able to rent by the night rather than the week.

Another option: Check out Chatham Tides Motel:

How about locating directly on Nantucket Sound? If your husband wants to hear the waves at night like I do, then you need to be directly on the ocean as that sound is very perishable.

Here%26#39;s some websites for you to check out for Dennisport and Yarmouth:

www.colonybeachmotel.com

www.threeseasonsresort.com (read about the Ocean House restaurant on their site too - fabulous dining and, in fall, they have had a $25. pp prix fixe too)

LASTLY, here is a review on the Ebb Tide from this TA site. This is NOT on the beach but across the street. The restaurant is on the street with the accommodations behind so that it is quiet.

';If you%26#39;re fond of sand dunes and salty air...you%26#39;re sure to fall in love with The Ebb Tide Restaurant. The Ebb Tide has been a family tradition for us since the 1960s. Always a highlight of our vacation, the restaurant serves New England cuisine. Don%26#39;t miss the crabcakes and the clam chowder, locally caught fish and home made desserts. It is always a highlight of our visit. It is a seasonal spot located across the street from Nantucket Sound. The gift shop next door is open late in the evenings for browsing.

A well kept secret is their Ebb Tide Cottages. They are 2 and 3 bedroom cottages with an in ground swimming pool. The rooms are good sized and they have a full kitchen. Like the restaurant they are quintessential Cape Cod. We have met several friends over the years and we enjoy coordinating our weeks. The restaurant is happy to do take out for cottage guests!

Whoops sorry about the Ebb Tide. It looks like it won%26#39;t be open in Oct.

But, if you do locate in this area, check out the Seaview restaurant next door. It%26#39;s new and is operated by the Ebb Tide folks. I would expect it to be open on the weekends and maybe Thursday too.

BTW, Ocean House is closed on Mondays. Another area restaurant for weekends is Oyster Co. and you can pick from a terrifically varied menu at Clancy%26#39;s on Upper County Rd.

Clancy%26#39;s does indeed have a varied menu.

They also have varying levels of service competency and food quality. Clancy%26#39;s isn%26#39;t a favorite of ours; the experience has varied from ';just OK'; to ';really awful';.

It%26#39;s a big place and the servers are pushed to the max to get %26#39;em in, get %26#39;em fed, and get %26#39;em out.

I think fussyguest is talking about the rush to move tables at most restaurants in July and Aug. but you are coming in October so you won%26#39;t experience that.

Thank you all for your great knowledge and advice which I will check out. If I need any more inforamtion I know just the place to come.
