Where in Boston.

Coming to Boston with work in early June. My colleague and myself are both 30 something guys who will have time out to enjoy the sights and the hopefully the beer!! We would like advice as to the best place to base ourselves (already considering Jury%26#39;s Hotel) that is central and near to some decent nightlife. We would like good places to eat with some atmosphere and bars that have 30/ 40 somethings that don%26#39;t take themselves too seriously. Any Techno style music would cause us both to commit suicide on the spot!

I have travelled quite a bit in the US but never made it to Boston and am very much looking forward to it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Jury%26#39;s would be an excellent location for you, or any hotel in that general area, such as the Copley Plaza, the Westin or Marriott Copley Place.

As far as nightlife, along Newbury St., there are lots of cafes and restaurants where you can hang at the bar and have fun. There%26#39;s also a few nightclubs and bars around the Park Plaza area, including Whiskey Park, which is supposed to be good.

The hottest place in town right now, also the big celebrity hangout where all the Hollywood types are gathering, is the Liberty Hotel. It%26#39;s a brand new hotel with a lot of charm (it%26#39;s a converted jail). It would be a good location as well, since the bar inside it (called Alibi...cute, huh?) is THE place right now.

If you stay at the Liberty Hotel, you are walking distance to Quincy Market, and all the tons of Irish pubs and bars around there, OR you can walk to the North Station area and hit all the sports bars and pubs in that area.

Hi,

Jurys is a great hotel, but it%26#39;s bar called Cuff%26#39;s is definitely super loud and caters to the younger crowd. I don%26#39;t think you would like that. There%26#39;s other places around there to enjoy some drinks, but not as many as the area around Fanueil Hall/Quincy Market. Fanueil Hall/Quincy has many places that cater to the younger crowd as well, but there%26#39;s several good irish style pubs within a few blocks that you would enjoy. Millenium Bostonian Hotel would be a good hotel choice BUT it%26#39;s currently undergoing a major renovation and may not be the best choice right now. There%26#39;s the Langham Hotel in the Financial District. It get%26#39;s quiet around the hotel at night, but it%26#39;s a 5 minute walk to Broad or State streets for good drinks and also around a 5 minute walk to Fanueil/Quincy.

Probably the best of them all for pub hopping is the Marriott Custom House. Very historical building that will put you right in the action. The Custom House is a great place to stay, but may be on the expensive side. Well worth it however. There%26#39;s other areas near North Station that has good bars/pubs as well.

There%26#39;s a nice restaurant with a bar right next to Jury%26#39;s called Laurel. Past Laurel and to the right on Columbus Ave. you will come to Club Cafe (largely gay), then a couple blocks ahead Clery%26#39;s, a large somewhat yuppie place that opens to the street if the weather is good. Continuing down Columbus you come to Coda, very good food but when I%26#39;ve been there, a slow bar scene (but then I%26#39;ve been there mainly around 11pm on Wednesdays). Past Coda is Anchovies, a decent restaurant and a friendly local bar -- I like it. Backtracking, there%26#39;s another bar, recently Tex-Mex, almost next to Clery%26#39;s on Dartmouth St. A real experience is Delux, a tiny local bar that%26#39;s popular and has really good if limited food and great atmosphere. It%26#39;s two blocks down Clarendon St. from Columbus. These South End places are less touristy than those in the Back Bay or downtown.

I was recently in Edinburgh and a place I really enjoyed was a bar halfway down Leithwalk near the edge of Leith. No tourists and a nice local atmosphere.

Thank you all for your assistance. It looks very much like it is going to be Jury%26#39;s. I know that the bar may be a bit young but over the piece it is well situated and gets good reviews. The other thing is the city is very busy in 5- 8th June, which I have just found out is Sox/ Yankees weekend. Any other advice now that we are going to be in that area would be much appreciated. I like the sound of some of the local/ Irish bars.

We are not going to even attempt Fenway, particularly now that I have seen some of the prices - $200 for the Bleachers!!!! Wore my kilt to Wrigley Field a few years ago and they let me in for nothing! (I know, Iknow the Sox are a good team)

If there is anything else on that weekend we would be glad to here about it.

Regards the last post our office is at the bottom of Leith Walk or ';the fit o%26#39; the Walk'; as it is known here. The bar may have been either the Volunteer,Spey or Shrub Bars.

Regards, Stuart.

It sounds like you haven%26#39;t made your reservations yet. You noted that you know it%26#39;s a busy time. I certainly wouldn%26#39;t wait any longer or you may have any choices considerably reduced.

AlanM

I wouldn%26#39;t worry about the Sox/Yankees series overtaking your weekend. The craziness is pretty much confined to the Fenway/Kenmore area. That being said, hitting one of the Fenway bars may prove to be an interesting and fun way for a kiltedwarrior to spend an afternon. Plus, the kilt would be a big hit.

There are many bars in Boston advertising themselves as ';aunthentic Irish bars.'; Most of them are not. Two that are: Mr. Dooley%26#39;s Tavern on Broad Street in the Financial District, and The Kinsale across the street from Government Center.
