Edmonton/Boston & New York

We are travelling to Edmonton, arriving 26th June and have 4 nights there before we leave 1st July to head to new York, where we will have 5 nights. we%26#39;ve been to NYC before so not too worried about amusing ourselves there, however we have never been to Edmonton and are looking for some help? If we hired a car in Edmonton would it be easy enough to get Motels/Hotels if driving around at that time of year, or would we have to book in advance? We don%26#39;t really know where we will end up so didn%26#39;t want to tie ourselves to booking, however, we would like some advise on this please.
