lighthouses and tidal pools

We will be staying in Dennisport for a week around July 4th and would like to take in some lighthouses.

Are there maps that show how to get to certain lighthouses? Also, which ones would be recommended.

Also want to take our daughter to the tidal pools but need some suggestions on where is recommended and how far of a drive from Dennisport. I have no idea about tides times and when the best time to go would be.

Thanks

Here%26#39;s a couple of websites that hopefully answer your questions.

While not open for tours, the only privately owned lighthouse in the country is on the beach in West Dennis at the Lighthouse Inn. You might consider going to the lovely beach at South Village Beach or the easy %26#39;drive-in%26#39; beach at West Dennis and walking to the Inn for lunch on their deck overlooking the Sound. If you%26#39;d like a little excitment you can rent a jet ski there too.

When you arrive on the Cape may I suggest that you stop at the info booth on 6? It is just after Hyannis. Pull off like a rest stop. You do not exit the highway. There you%26#39;ll find all sorts of info including a free copy of Cape Week which comes out every Friday. There will be a list of scheduled openings at many lighthouses.

Also, the lighthouse in Chatham is open for tours on Wed. afternoons from 1 to 3:30. No kids under 5 allowed. 508-430-0628. However there is a problem with parking there as you can only stay 30 minutes. Since there is a line to go up into the lighthouse that is problematic. The view is really terrific. Consider parking at the Eldredge Taxi parking lot on Main St. and taking the taxi over.

Tidal pools: Dennis is only 7 miles wide from the Sound to the Bay. There are several wonderful Bay beaches. Our favorite is Mayflower but all are nice. Be sure to go when the tide is out or going out so that you can enjoy those tidal pools. Since you are going in July please note that even the bigger parking lots fill up by 10 or 11AM.

Have fun.

Thank you for that information.

This will be our second time on the cape. We went for a week two years ago at the same time, around the 4th of July. Some people think we are crazy to go at that time but we absolutely loved it.

Yes the traffic could be bad but generally, everyone was very nice. The worst part was getting over the cape.

This year because it takes us about 10 hours to drive there, we are leaving on Friday the 4th and spending the night in Taunton, MA, about an hour from the bridges and leaving early in the morning on the 5th to hopefully avoid some of the bridge traffic.

If you are interested you might want to check out some local firework displays and make your overnight stay in or near a town that might have a 4th celebration

Cape Cod light is open for climbing also nice gift shop. 3 sister lights are only example of triple lights in the country. the offical park service map of the cape cod national seashore shws most of the lighthouse

nthoov,

I live right down the street from the Taunton Holiday Inn. It%26#39;s a good spot to stop off after a long day of driving to the Cape. It%26#39;s a pretty nice hotel, better than most HI%26#39;s. Nice indoor pool and whirlpool. There%26#39;s 2 restaurants there, Silver%26#39;s and Copper Fountain Grille. Definitely go to Copper Fountain IF you plan to eat there. The hotel is right inside the entrance to the Myles Standish Industrial Park off 495 (exit 9). I%26#39;m sure you know that. Right outside the park is a Wendy%26#39;s, New England Hot Dog (very good dogs) and a Ruby Tuesdays. There%26#39;s also a Dunkin Donuts in a little plaza across from those places for that early morning coffee.

Re Chatham Light Parking: You can drop everyone off at the lighthouse, take a quick drive around the corner from the lighthouse and park on nearby Bridge Street beyond the ';no parking'; signs. For free. And it%26#39;s a nice walk. And you don%26#39;t have to wait for anyone to pick you up!

Thank you all for your info.

For Will007:

That is the hotel I booked and I am glad to know it is nice. I always do research on hotels before I book and this one seemed nice and easy access off 495. How far of a drive would you say it is from the hotel to the bridges?

Yes, we did plan on eating at the hotel especially because kids eat free so theres a couple more bucks for the gas tank.
