We will be renting a house in Ispwich for 1 week this summer and will be going to Boston either 3-4 days. There are 5 of us.
We will have a car but I realize parkign in Boston is difficult. I had thought we would take the train but it seems like it would be about $15 or so apiece which would be $75 each time.
I am trying to figure out if there is a way we could drive somewhere and catch a train on the 1 -1A zone and therefore utilize the 1 week subway pass.
Can anyone tell me if this makes any sense. I am finding the subway-commuter train information a little hard to digest.
Thanks,
Transportation from Ipswich to Boston--
Yes, I see that your round trip commuter train ride from Ipswich will cost you $13.50 a day. Unfortunately, the nearest subway is the Blue line%26#39;s Wonderland station in Revere, MA. OR you could go to the Orange line%26#39;s Oak Grove station in Melrose, MA. Do you really want to do that? It%26#39;s up to you. Mapquest the directions from Ipswich and you%26#39;ll see what I mean.
I would think where you%26#39;re coming from out of state and with the gas the way it is these days? It makes sense to take the commuter rail in to Boston every day. One thing about it, parking is free at the Ipswich station. That is IF you can get a parking spot at that one! I remember the Ipswich station being a lot smaller than the one I took all the time (Newburyport station%26#39;s). So if I were you? Try to leave as early as you can in the mornings so you can scoop up one of those spaces in Ipswich.
If you can%26#39;t get a spot? You could always head north on Rte 1-A up to Newburyport%26#39;s commuter rail parking lot. You%26#39;ll get a spot there because usually there%26#39;s a lot of them during the week at that one; plus it%26#39;s a LOT bigger than Ipswich%26#39;s lot. They have parking fees at this one though, their fees are placed in the silver slots up near the train%26#39;s entrance, if you don%26#39;t put it there? You get a ticket on your car, it used to be $2, it might have gone up to $3. I don%26#39;t know what they charge now at this one, haven%26#39;t taken it in a while. It%26#39;s still worth it, if you decide to do that.
You can check out Newburyport AND Boston all in one day this way!
Have a wonderful time. I like your plan to rent a house in Ipswich, that%26#39;ll be really neat!

From Ipswich the zone 1A would be Chelsea. The 1A zones do not help you. Chelsea would not be convenient for you. It would be better for you to drive to a T stop. The closest subway stop would be the Wonderland Blue Line%26#39;s T stop in Revere or the Orange Line%26#39;s Wellington%26#39;s T stop in Medford.
Parking at Wellington%26#39;s Garage is $3.50 and the parking lot at Wonderland is $3.00.
Another option would be to drive to Salem and take the Salem Ferry. The price is not cheaper than the Commuter Rail but it would be a pleasant way to arrive in Boston. There should be free parking around the dock.
You also have the option to drive into the city. The Boston Common Garage is the most convenient to most tourist attractions including the Freedom Trail. Rates on the Weekdays - $22 for 10 hours or $11 all day on weekends.
