Hello,
We will be in Boston a few weeks. I wasn%26#39;t concerned about using public transportation and/or walking after dark until I read something in travel guide. It said to that Boston Common is not safe after dark. True? We are staying just outside the Pubic Garden on Beacon Street and will have to walk from the T to our lodgings at the end of the day/night. We have two kids, so probably the latest we%26#39;ll be out is when we return from night Red Sox game.
Thanks.
safe at night?
The Common and Public Garden are not unsafe, but as in any big city you might encounter drug deals or homeless people late at night. You are unlikely to robbed or assaulted or anything like that, but if you are unfamiliar with the area, it would be a good idea to be careful very late at night and maybe walk around the parks. If you are staying on Beacon near the Garden, your nearest T stops are Arlington on the Green Line, where you can walk on Arlington St. or Charles on the Red Line where you can walk on Charles St. The streets in the area are very safe and you do not have to go into the parks.
safe at night?
Yes, no need to go through the parks at night. Beacon Street is a main thoroughfare and there%26#39;s plenty of streets that will connect you to Beacon without cutting through the parks. Charles Street is another main street that cuts between both parks and is fine to walk at night. Boston is a very safe city at night, but you don%26#39;t want to go asking for trouble if you don%26#39;t have to. Enjoy the city and enjoy the game.
The T is safer that lonely stretches of shadowy pathways in the Common late late at night. The worst I%26#39;ve encountered late at night has been some of those giant city rats (four-legged variety) and a homeless person or two. The later, the sketchier the Common gets. If there%26#39;s something going on (the 4th etc.) there are crowds to go with. As with any city, you want to avoid lonely places late at night.
Sidewalks are well lit and relatively safe; you should have no problem getting to your lodgings. Just use common sense, look around and be aware of your surroundings.
Giant city rats? I hope I don%26#39;t see any of those! (I still get heebie jeebies thinking about the rats I saw in a NYC subway terminal a few years ago).
Thank you everyone for your help. Sounds just like walking around Portland, or any city, after dark. We%26#39;ll use common sense and stay out the parks and on the sidewalks.
Yes, 4dmama that%26#39;s the best plan. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid dark, lonely stretches. If need be take the longer route to get to your destination.
Maybe they%26#39;re not GIANT, but they can be pretty hefty. :-) Not everywhere/all the time but if you%26#39;re in the city late, you can see them scuttling around...dumpsters/trashcans are where I%26#39;ve seen them. Once I was at Govt Ctr T stop at 11ish one night and one of them scurried right by my friends and me.. eeeek!
I%26#39;m bringing my cat - he will sort them out!!
