Boston to Montreal

My husband and I are headed to Boston in July from San Francisco. While we are out there, we were thinking would should check out Montreal too. Is it easy to drive from Boston to Montreal or should we fly? Are we able to rent a car and drive it into another country? Thanks!

Boston to Montreal

You can drive, but the drive will take up the better part of a day. It%26#39;s a good six hours if I remenber correctly. I%26#39;ve done it a few times. You go through some very scenic mountain areas in Vermont. So you are looking at at least 3 days of your vacation. One to drive up, one to spend in Montreal, one to drive back. Of course if you fly, you could go up for just one night.

If you have limited time in the Boston area it doesn%26#39;t make sense to veer this far of course. There is plenty to see around here.

Boston to Montreal

The drive to Montreal is an easy, albeit boring, ride. Count on a six hour drive. With a valid passport you shouldn%26#39;t have a problem crossing the border in a rental.

I%26#39;ve driven from Boston to Montreal in a rental car. Most of the major rental companies will allow it but you should let them know ahead of time that you will be taking the car to Canada. I don%26#39;t remember exactly how long it took to drive there, it%26#39;s been a while since I did it, but I think it was somewhere around 7 hours with a few pit stops along the way. You may want to comapre the cost of flying vs driving given the current gas prices and the total charges for the car rental and insurance....it may be very little difference in cost and a much shorter trip by plane.

One very nice trip is north to Quebec through Jackman, Me., then upriver to Montreal, then back to Boston through Vermont. Lots of driving but lots to see. After driving through the forests of northern Maine you come out into the open Quebec countryside and you could be in France. Quite a thrill!

Hi,

It is an easy, boring, and green drive to Montreal up thru Vermont. For years we would drive from Boston to Ottawa (and stop in Montr茅al) for my son%26#39;s hockey tournaments. Always looked forward to the trips. We were there on July 1, which is Canada%26#39;s Independence Day (same as our 4th) great time. (but it was always nice to be back in Boston for the 4th). (allow extra time to go accross the boarder)

It%26#39;s 1:45 from Burlington VT to downtown Montreal...and Boston to Burlington is 3:45...so assuming your pit stops and traffic slowdowns are minimal, 5 and a half hours gets you there.

What you need to consider carefully is added time crossing the border. I%26#39;ve zipped through in 5 minutes, and I%26#39;ve been in long lines getting back into the U.S. that consumed 2 hours. If you have a plane flight out of Boston to catch, don%26#39;t even think about gambling on a quick crossing.

I know it%26#39;s a long drive, but Montreal is absolutely splendid, a truly beautiful city, great restaurants, easy to drive in and out of.

It is a beautiful drive.

This summer my hubby %26amp; I are making the opposite trip (driving from Montreal to Boston). Does anyone have ideas for scenic drives on the way other than just taking the freeway? Also any ideas for interesting pit stops along the way? Thanks!

Make sure you stop in Burlington, Vermont. It%26#39;s a great little city.

I have to jump in here and say that Canada Day on July 1 is not at all the same as July 4 in the U.S.
